The 2010 ECAFL season kicked off with the league’s newest team the Power taking on a completely rebuilt Saints outfit. In pristine conditions the Power showed some glimpses of brilliance controlling a majority of the ball early. Poor kicking and a superb effort from Sam Heath down back halted the Power’s march. Saints caretaker coach Mat Wilson had his team well drilled punishing the Power on their few turnovers, the Saints surgical precision giving them a 9 point lead at the first break. The second term was neck and neck, Carl Ferreri and Mick Lacy stand outs for the Saints while Beaman, Lagace and Oxley kept the Power right in the game. The Saints would extend their lead to 16 heading into half-time.
The third quarter belonged to Carl Ferreri. The man they call ‘Doghouse’ played like a pitbull. Throwing himself into the contests he drove the ball forward feeding Mick Lacy and Mat Wilson. The Saints cruising into the last break a with a handy three goal break. Debutant Power coach Greg Bretiere wasn’t about to lie down yet. He rallied his troops for a last quarter comeback and like their name sake it wasn’t long before the Saints felt the brunt of one mighty power surge. Paul Barrow had been on fire in the ruck all day and a goal from PB, two to Richo Beaman and one more to Ryan Oxley had the Power within a kick. A costly free kick against the Power in the final minute ended the dream of a come behind victory. The Saints kicking a last second goal that was later disallowed due to a time keeping error. In the end the Saints escaping with a 6 point win.

Power record first win over ’09 champions
Pointe Claire Power 2.1 6.3 8.5 13.5 (83)
Laval Bombers 3.3 6.3 10.3 11.5 (71)
Goals: Power – Cam Beaman 6, N.Pouessel 3, G.Bretiere 2, T.Nixon 1. Bombers – D.Haverhoek 4, S.Blight 3, D.Wilson 2, D.Anderson 1, N.Switzer 1.
The Power headed into their second game of the day facing an undermanned Bombers line up. The Bombers called on a host of spare parts players to fill their squad and to everyone’s surprise the red and black looked in fine touch having 6 scoring shots to 3 in the first term and securing a handy 8 point lead at the first break.
The second term belonged to the Power however. Finding their second wind Nico Pouessel got amongst the goals and the Pointe Claire team started to slowly pick apart the Bombers carefully constructed game plan. By quarters end the scores were all locked up at 39 a piece.

The tactical mind games between Bretiere and Blight continued into the third but this quarter would go to the veteran ECAFL coach Blight as the Bombers poured on 4 goals to 2. Highlight of the quarter no doubt Dave Wilson who dived on a loose ball in front of goal, army rolled out of the pack – sprung to his feet and snapped truly for goal of the day.
With only 9 points in it, the last quarter was going to be a fierce competition. The Power slotted through an early goal to even things up but a cut to Darrin Haverhoek who had been the Bombers best player out of the middle forced him to leave the field and stopped the Bombers in their tracks. The Power used this and their fantastic finishing power to slam on another 4 goals and seemingly put the game beyond reach. The Power on the back of 6 goals from ‘Richo’ Beaman and fantastic support from Bretiere and Pouessel took home the premiership points with a two goal victory. The wash-up from the round meant that the Saints would be happy coming away with a gutsy win. The Power could easily have been 2-0 but will be delighted that the are capable of beating any team on their day. And for the Bombers it was a superb effort that will be boosted by the return of a number of key players for round 2.
