2010 Call to Arms charity match |
At the end of round 3 the Saints has stormed to outright flag favouritism. At the end of the first quarter of round 4 they confirmed their status as top dog. From that moment the Saints were outscored 21 goals to 4, the door to the 2010 ECAFL premiership once again wide open as the phrase ‘a week is a long time in football’ rung out so very true.
The Saints took early control of the match, Sam Heath enjoying a move into the centre continued his stellar season putting through two goals. Wilson and Wood would both add majors as the Saints edged the Bombers in the first term 4.0 (24) to 2.1 (13).
Both teams were enjoying fresh recruits and it was the Bombers in the second term that found their feet. Daniel Barker kicked two to bring his tally to three for the day, Lachy, Nico and Gilliam would all add a goal a piece as the Saints seemingly stopped in their tracks. Nico Pouessel beginning to make inroads in the ruck department and Darrin Haverhoek once again owning the centre clearances. Mat Wilson playing with an injured ankle and restricted to the goal square added his second but it was a 5 goal to 1 quarter for the Bombers that had the red and black army 15 points at the half.
The Bombers continued to press the Saints wounds in the third. Wilson was left stranded at full forward as he watched the Bombers slam 7 goals onto the scoreboard, Haverhoek doing the most damage with 3 for the quarter, Barker chipping in with two and bringing his tally to 5 for the match. At the other end Dave Wilson slotted through two goals for the Saints but the damage had been done. The Bombers in control by 38 points at the last change.
If the Saints were hoping for mercy it wasn’t forthcoming. The Bombers smelled blood in the water as all players pushed forward searching for a goal. 9 goals 4 to zero in the last, Haverhoek with another 3 in the fourth quarter for 6 total, Barker kicked two more for seven and two to Bretiere made it six different goal scorers in the Bombers huge 96 point victory.
