When Fred Frost took over the reigns of the Montreal Saints he made two statements. One, He wasn't at all concerned the Saints were 1-3, and two it's the business end of the year that counts.
Sunday Fred's coaching record moved to 2-1 and unbelievably the Saints moved into flag favourites.
On a hot afternoon at Parc Jarry the Saints and Bombers fought out Round 7 of the ECAFL season. The Bombers (4-2) needed a win to mathematically close the door on the Saints while the Montreal boys needed two big 10 goal wins to have any chance of claiming top spot.
With possibly their best line-up of the year the Saints were able to put a sensational spine on the field of Frost down back, Shaughnessy at centre at Pat 'the Gap' Considine up forward. After the years second 'mini-draft' in which the Saints took Chris Lagace #1 the game got underway. The Saints showed quickly they had more run, Shaugnessy doing his best to destroy the Bombers in the first the Saints link ups through the centre of the ground were surgical like as they dissected the flat Bombers and launched away to a 5 goal to zero first quarter.
Chris Lagace had proved a valuable pick up with 2 first quarter goals and the Saints picked up in the second exactly were they had left off in the third. PJ Devine was tenacious through the middle while the Frost, Shaughnessy, Considine line continued to manafacture goal after goal. The Bombers were flat footed, second to the ball and outplayed at every position. They had no answer for Considine at full forward and the on-ball brigade of the Saints powered along by Ferreri and co proved just as difficult to hold. The heat was taking it's toll on the players and although the Bombers had a sub it was the Saints who looked the fresher of the two teams. The half time score was a shock to everyone, 7.4 to 0.4 the Bombers had been kept goalless in a half for the first time in their history and furthermore it didn't appear they were any closer to actually scoring a goal.
The Saints cruising with a 42 point lead put the foot down further in the third, Nick Switzer added 2 for the quarter as the Saints kicked the first 4 goals and bolted to a 66 point lead. James-Robert who had been quiet all day by his lofty standards launched a massive kick late in the quarter scoring the Bombers first goal and reducing the margin to 60, Roberts collapsing in the sun with dehydration the Bombers side completely dominated in every aspect of the game.
The last quarter began with an unusual feeling, the Saints having already wrapped up the game coasted home in the last, the Bombers finally scored some consolation goals but the all-star midfield of Stark and Vawser had been well held for the first time all year, the injury to Declan Coyne proving a massive hole in the teams defense. The Saints home by a record 54 point winning margin.
